In September 2022, Minister-President Pierre-Yves Jeholet signed a cooperation agreement between the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
The agreement aims at promoting and protecting the Human rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo, notably through 6 priorities:
- the reinforcement of the rule of law and the obligation to take accountability for human rights violations.
- the amelioration and protection of the civic space and the participation of the population.
- the reinforcement of equality and the fight against discrimination.
- the integration of human rights in the sustainable development.
- the early alerting, prevention and protection of human rights in conflict situations.
- the reinforcement of the application of international human rights mechanisms.
According to the terms of this agreement, the Wallonia-Brussels Federation puts to the use of the HCDH an amount of 100.000 Euros per year for the period of 2022-2024.
The Minister-President Jeholet is delighted to contribute in this way at improving the often dramatic fate of some populations from this country with which Belgium has always maintained privileged relations.
This agreement also enables the reaffirmation of values which are dear to us: solidarity, equality and democracy.
Finally, this agreement will only reinforce the visibility of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation on the international scene.
